Stanley's
Stanley’s sits in the heart of Castletown, the ancient capital of the Isle of Man, directly opposite Castle
Rushen – one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles. Built over 800 years ago by a Norse king, Castle Rushen has served as a Viking fortress, a Civil War stronghold, a prison, and now stands as a living symbol of Manx history and identity.
Stanley’s is a modern, independent restaurant and café offering:
- All-day brunches
- Fresh, seasonal lunches
- Mediterranean-style evening food
- Fine wines, crafted cocktails, and speciality barista drinks
Stanley’s is a place to unwind, meet, eat and drink – with stunning castle views, a welcoming team, and a relaxed, stylish interior.
Takeaway food and drinks are available during kitchen hours, and bookings are encouraged in the evening.
Our Story
The name “Stanley’s” is a nod to the Stanley family, who were granted the title Lords of Mann and ruled the island from 1405 to 1738. Most notably, James Stanley, the 7th Earl of Derby – also known as The Great Stanley – governed from Castle Rushen during the English Civil War. His tenure shaped much of the island’s
historical and political legacy.
But there’s a twist.
One of Stanley’s founders, Adrian Christian, named his son William Christian, in honour of the Manx patriot
Illiam Dhone – who was executed by the Stanley regime for leading a rebellion. Today, the Christian family, along with the Thompson family, opens this new chapter with a respectful but cheeky nod to the past – running Stanley’s just steps away from where that moment in Manx history unfolded.
It’s a place where past and present meet – rich in story, deeply local, and full of character.
